This page is about the Dark

The idea behind "In the Dark" first came to me a couple of years ago in my senior high school year, during a conversation vith two of my co-eds about how "good" and "evil" are purely subjective.

Although that sparked my imagination and I did doodle a bit on the matter at the time, work on the comic didn't start until the end of November 2002, at witch time I dicovered Faith Erin Hicks's awesome comic "Demonology 101", to wich I owe a lot in terms of character design (especially Ysill, modeled after one of my fav "D 101" characters, Elspeth) and style of drawing.

Of course, although some may argue I shamelessly ripped off Faith's comic (both are about demons), both the ideas behind "ItD" and the background/ setting are mine and differ radically from "D 101".

The main idea of the comic is the fact that maybe, just maybe, in this world there aren't such things as purely good or sheer evil, and things we are used to associate with the said names may be indeed very similar. In a "more to the comic" way of putting it, in "ItD" the "Lord of the Light", supreme God of Earth, is as power greedy as his nemesis, the Demonkind, the only reason for wich He is reffered to as "good" and the others as "evil" being the fact that He (having some power over Earth) created those associations in people's minds.

Having said that, the story is simple: at some time in the past, The 12 Lords of the Universe joined their magic to create Earth an everything on it, from humans to rocks. In order to better rule over this new world, they created the Council meetings, at wich decisions about Earth's welbeeing were to be taken and chose one of them to become head of the Council, "Lord of the Light", a job that he/she is to hold for a period of 5000 earth years.

For "police duties" and defense against other Lords who might try to conquer Earth, an army of Angels was created, having as commanders the Archangels Gabriel and Satan. The Angels are creatures that only listen to the Council or the "Lord of the Light" and have no way to choose their own path in life.

Upon the aparition of humans on Earth, great care was taken to ensure the new creature will be both intelligent and independent from their creators as to give the new world a certain degree of random behaviour. Since Angelkind had no such thing, various speculations upon the veridicity of the said human "free will" started amid the Angel troops.

Some of the Angels, led by Satan, tried to verify this and, unknown to the Council and Lord, set up a test wich involved two humans, Adam and Eve, and a tree that had incapsulated in its fruits some of the Fundamental Knowledge of the world. Were the two humans to eat the fruits (a thing that had been forbidden by the Creators), the existence of human "free will" would be proven.

Afer the succes of the test, the said Angels, (still led by Satan) called in a Council meeting and requested "free will" to be given to all Angelkind. The Lord of The Light was furious, and instead of satisfying their demands, banned them from the Heavens and called them "Demons", creatures of the Dark, wich although still bound to the orders of the Council and the Lord, are to be regarded as evil.

And it is at this precise moment, that The Lord of the Light first thinks about dissolving the council and keeping all the power for himself. With that goal in mind, he sets about further discrediting the allready banned demons in the eyes of the Council as to create himself some worhy opposition. The trick works, and the council grants him more and more power in order to counter the assumed "threat".

In the meantime, hundreds of years go by, and humankind sets about conquering the Globe on wich they live.

The action of the comic takes place in the present time, when, seeing that his mandate is about to expire, the Lord of the Light is about to give the Council a fatal blow and claim all the power for himself.

At the same time, Demonkind scores a victory, by the Council's reluctant aproval for the "free will" issue to be finally judged. As this would be a desaster for The Lords's ambitious plans, He tries to refuse, but is overuled. The Council come to an agreement and state that the only way to rightfully decide on the matter is to bring to the next meeting, in 6 months, a human being to act as the judge, since Humankind has the ability to choose it's own path. A human is randomly chosen, and a demon is sent to guide him to the Council...

And here starts TROUBLE for everyone!
